🎯 FIT & SIZING — Clifton 9 GTX vs Competitor
| Brand | Weight | Drop | Size advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hoka Clifton 9 GTX | 280g | 5mm | True to size |

👉 Hoka fits true-to-size with medium-high volume. Wide foot? Take your usual size — generous fit. Narrow foot? Tighten the laces well.
🚫 WHEN NOT TO CHOOSE THIS SHOE
❌ Temperatures above 18°C → risk of foot overheating: see Men's Running Shoes without GTX
❌ Technical trail with rocks → outsole not aggressive enough for extreme terrain
❌ Track races or paces below 4'00"/km → too cushioned, a reactive shoe is needed
❌ Severe pronation → neutral shoe: explore Hoka Arahi or Gaviota with support
❌ Weight over 100kg → consider maximum cushioning
🧺 GORE-TEX MAINTENANCE
🌡️ Hand wash with cold water and mild soap — never machine wash/dry
☀️ Dry naturally away from direct heat (sun/radiator)
🔄 Reactivate DWR every 50–70km with technical water repellent spray
📦 Store in a cool, dry place — do not compress the upper
⏱️ Membrane lifespan: 800–1,000km depending on surfaces and frequency of use
💡 EDUCATIONAL SECTION — Gore-Tex vs Generic Waterproof
Not all waterproof shoes are created equal. The Gore-Tex membrane is the industry gold standard: it guarantees certified waterproofing (water column >28,000mm) with RET <13 breathability, meaning your foot stays dry both from the outside and the inside. Generic waterproof alternatives block water but, not being breathable, create internal condensation — your foot will still get wet after 30 minutes. The Clifton 9 GTX uses Invisible Fit technology: the membrane is fused to the upper (not stitched) for reduced weight and comfort identical to the non-GTX version.
❓ FAQ
Is it truly waterproof or just water-repellent?
100% certified Gore-Tex waterproof — not just a surface DWR treatment. Tested in immersion and heavy rain.
Can I use it in summer too?
Not recommended above 18°C: the GTX membrane reduces breathability compared to the standard Clifton 9. For warm weather, see Men's Running Shoes.
Difference between Clifton 9 and Clifton 9 GTX?
Same EVA cushioning and Meta-Rocker, but the GTX adds a Gore-Tex membrane (+20g weight). Choose GTX for rain/cold, standard Clifton 9 for temperate climates.
Is it suitable for a marathon?
Yes — EVA cushioning and Meta-Rocker guarantee protection up to 42km. Ideal for marathon runners in adverse conditions.
Does it fit like other Hokas?
Yes, true-to-size like the entire Clifton line. If you wear standard Clifton 9, take the same size.
